How Much Will Solar Save You?
Enter your monthly electricity bill to see the solar system you need, what it costs after subsidy, your savings, ROI and payback period.

Find it on your bill: total amount ÷ units consumed.
About 100 sq. ft. is needed per kW.
Your Solar Estimate
You use about 429 units a month.
- Recommended system4 kW
- Generation~480 units/month
- Roof area used~400 sq. ft.
- System cost (approx.)₹2.3 lakh – ₹2.75 lakh
- Monthly savings₹3,000
- Payback period4.8 years
Return on investment over 25 years: 603%
Estimates use typical market prices, 120 units/kW a month, a 3% yearly tariff rise and 0.5% yearly panel ageing. Your site survey gives the exact numbers.
How Much Solar Do I Need?
Start with your electricity bill. Take the units you use in a month (average a summer and a winter bill) and divide by 120 — the units one kW of solar panels makes in a month in most of India.
- 150–250 units a month → 1.5–2 kW
- 300–400 units a month → 3 kW (3 kW price)
- 500–650 units a month → 5 kW (5 kW price)
- 1,000–1,300 units a month → 10 kW (10 kW price)
Then check your roof: you need about 100 sq. ft. of shade-free space per kW, and your sanctioned load should be at least the system size (your DISCOM can raise it if not).
Solar Savings: A Worked Example
A home paying ₹3,000 a month at ₹7 a unit uses about 429 units. A 3 kW system makes about 360 units a month, saving roughly ₹2,520 a month. It costs about ₹1.93 lakh; the ₹78,000 subsidy brings that to ₹1.15 lakh.
Solar Payback Period
The payback period is how long your bill savings take to cover what you paid: net cost ÷ yearly savings. In the example above that’s about 3.8 years. Higher tariffs, the subsidy, and using solar power in the daytime all shorten it.
Solar ROI
Panels are warrantied to keep producing for 25 years, so everything after the payback period is profit. In the example, 25 years of savings come to about ₹10.31 lakh — a return of about 800% on the money spent, allowing for rising tariffs and slow panel ageing. Few investments a household can make return as much, as safely.

FAQ
Solar Calculator Questions
How much solar do I need for my home?
Divide your monthly units by 120 — that’s how many units one kW of panels makes in a month in most of India. A home using 300 units a month needs about 2.5–3 kW; one using 600 units needs about 5 kW. Check you have about 100 sq. ft. of shade-free roof per kW.
What is the payback period of rooftop solar in India?
For homes with the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, usually 3–5 years. Businesses without the subsidy typically recover their investment in 3–4 years because they pay higher tariffs and use most of their power in daytime, when solar produces.
What is the ROI of a solar system?
It depends on your tariff and subsidy. A 3 kW home system at ₹7 a unit, after subsidy, saves about 9 times its cost over 25 years — roughly a 26% simple return a year, well above a fixed deposit. Higher tariffs mean a faster return.
How accurate is this solar calculator?
It uses typical market prices and average generation for India, so it is a good first estimate. Actual generation depends on your location, roof direction and shading — a free site survey gives you exact numbers.
Will solar bring my electricity bill to zero?
It can bring it close. With net metering, units you export during the day offset units you import at night. You’ll still pay your DISCOM’s fixed charges, which are usually small.
