So, Which Is the Best Solar Panel for a Home?

For most Indian homes in 2026, the best choice is a DCR TOPCon panel of 540 W or more from an ALMM-listed manufacturer. It makes more power from the same roof than Mono PERC, holds up better in summer heat, and qualifies for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy of up to ₹78,000.

If your roof is large and your budget tight, a DCR Mono PERC panel is still a sound choice. If you’re installing on an elevated structure, consider bifacial panels for the extra rear-side output.

DCR vs Non-DCR Panels

DCR panels use cells manufactured in India. They cost more than non-DCR panels (which use imported cells), but the subsidy more than covers the difference for a home. Businesses that don’t take the subsidy often choose non-DCR panels to lower the price per kW.

Don’t Choose Panels on Brand Alone

The panel is roughly half the cost of a system. A good inverter, a correctly designed structure, proper earthing and a careful installation matter just as much to how much power you get over 25 years. That’s why it pays to choose an installer as carefully as the panel — see what’s included in our home solar installation and the Bhanu warranty.

Checklist: Before You Buy Solar Panels

  • Listed in MNRE’s ALMM (Approved List of Models and Manufacturers)
  • DCR (Made-in-India cells) if you want the PM Surya Ghar subsidy
  • BIS certification (IS 14286 / IEC 61215 & 61730)
  • Wattage of 540 W or more, so fewer panels fill your roof
  • Product warranty of 10–12 years and performance warranty of 25–30 years
  • Low first-year degradation (≤2%) and yearly degradation (≤0.55%)
  • Low temperature coefficient (around −0.30%/°C or better) for Indian summers

FAQ

Solar Panel Questions

Which solar panel is best for home use in India?

For most homes, a DCR TOPCon panel of 540 W or more from an ALMM-listed manufacturer is the best choice today: high efficiency, good performance in heat, and eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy. Mono PERC remains a good lower-cost option if roof space isn’t tight.

What is a DCR solar panel?

DCR (Domestic Content Requirement) panels use solar cells made in India, not just assembled here. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy is only available on systems built with DCR panels.

Is TOPCon better than Mono PERC?

Yes, in most respects. TOPCon panels are 1–2 percentage points more efficient, lose less output in heat and degrade more slowly. They cost a little more, but usually produce more power over the system’s life.

Are bifacial panels worth it for a home?

They are worth it on an elevated structure or a white/light roof, where the rear side receives reflected light and can add a few percent to output. Flush on a dark roof, the gain is small.

How long do solar panels last?

Quality panels carry a 25–30 year performance warranty and keep working beyond that at slightly reduced output — typically still 80–87% of their original rating after 25–30 years.
